The game of Hitori can be played on just about any size of board, but probably the smallest valid board which can actually be 'played' is 3x1 cells. The common board sizes range from 5x5 up to 15+ square, but newspapers currently publishing the puzzle are using the 8x8 size.
There are three simple rules which describe the game of Hitori:
Numbers must be 'painted' out of the grid so that only one unique occurrence of any number in a white cell exists in both the row and column it occupies
Painted cells must not be adjacent
Painted cells must not form an enclosed region that divides one region of white cells from another on the board
Generally, players mark a cell as 'painted' by colouring it black (we call this setting), or demonstrate that a cell should remain white by circling it.
